AgeTest is a new CitizenCard service available to all retail organisations, and to those who work with or train shop or bar staff. It can be used by restaurants, cinemas, nightclubs, bingo halls and betting shops.

The constant barrage of test purchasing, or ‘immoral entrapment’ as JD Wetherspoons’ Chairman Tim Martin calls it, means that alcohol and tobacco retailers need to constantly keep their staff aware of the need to ask for proof of age from customers who look under 21, or as advised by Trading Standards, under 25.

The most effective way of checking on staff compliance is to engage CitizenCard’s AgeTest service. We’ll develop a bespoke testing regime for your company which means young-looking 18 and 19 year olds will visit your premises to check whether staff are asking for ID. Test fees start at just £20 per test.

The AgeTest teenagers will attempt to obtain access to your age-restricted premises or to buying age-restricted goods from those premises.

We’ll agree with you beforehand when the tests will be carried out and whether you want the test carried out in particular circumstances (for example by a male or female tester, attempting to purchase a particular product, etc.).

The testers will report back on whether they were asked for ID, if so whether the ID was checked, and they will describe the time of the check, the appearance and/or name of the member of staff and any other relevant results. ID signage will also be checked.

Results will be reported to you within 24 hours, or earlier if you need the results faster. We’ll also provide analysis of the results so that different locations, staff demographics, times of day/week, and product differences can all be filtered to give you accurate feedback on the success of the tests.
