  The focus on age-restricted sales has never been greater; Home Office funded test-purchasing continues, Trading Standards and Police are increasing their enforcement activity, and the industry is under growing pressure to eliminate under age sales of tobacco, alcohol, lottery tickets, solvents, DVDs and other age-restricted products.
  
  Retailers and licensees are embracing Responsible Retailing initiatives and taking more and more measures to demonstrate due diligence; the consequences of selling illegally are severe – fines of up to £5000 and prison sentences being very real possibilities for staff at all levels.
  
  
• Using CitizenCard at the point-of-sale
  
  The PASS hologram assures customers, staff and enforcement officers that the CitizenCard verification and production processes have passed a stringent and rigorous audit process carried out by Trading Standards Officers and that the card may be relied upon.
  
  At the point of sale, a CitizenCard could not be easier to verify; each card clearly states the age of the customer, and also their date of birth and the date at which they become, or became, 18. Staff can be confident that by following a simple three point check (photo, hologram, age), they are selling legally.
